Adumu (Classic Print)

Adumu (Classic Print)

Il Ngwesi Group Ranch, Northern Kenya: The late-afternoon sun casts long shadows over the dry scrub, and the Maasai men of Il Ngwesi's villages gather in a clearing under a large acacia tree– and begin their dance. The air is thick with the sound of the chanting voices of the men and women of the village, rising and falling in a syncopated rhythm. The sandaled feet of the men kick up a fine dust as they leap skyward in unison.

Witnessing the adumu– this emblematic dance of the Maasai, I couldn't help but recall the sounds of the bush I had encountered in the days leading up to this moment: the piercing cry of the fish eagle during the baking midday sun; the low rumble of the elephants in the pitch black of night, and the world of sound that existed in between… Somehow they were all here, reflected in this dance.
