Maral (Frameless Print)

Maral (Frameless Print)

Bayan-Ölgii Province, Mongolia: The yurt—an enduring symbol of nomadic steppe culture—remains the home of choice for many in Western Mongolia. What stays with me most about yurt life isn’t just the landscape, but the sounds: the soft murmurs of conversation and the gentle bubbling of fresh tea on a wood-fired stove. I remember being feverish, spending the day under the comforting weight of a thick felt blanket. When I woke, the light filtering through the skylight gave me no clue as to the hour, only that the day had drifted far along.

I watched as Maral guided her daughter to tend to the tea, while she quietly nursed her baby. Moments later, her son burst through the door from his play outside, offering his mother a brief embrace before racing back out into the steppe.

Western Mongolia, along with parts of China, is home to the last of the traditional Kazakh nomads. Here, they live much as their ancestors did, moving with the seasons, following the lush grasslands that sustain their way of life.
