Memories of Kashgar (Frameless Print)
Memories of Kashgar (Frameless Print)
Old Town Kashgar, Xinjiang, China: A schoolboy stops at a small, timeworn shop, its exterior weathered by the elements. The elderly shopkeeper greets him with a warm smile as the boy carefully selects his produce.
Kashgar, nestled in the far west of China, is a city rich in history and steeped in tradition. Its name, "stone of measurement," calls back to a time when it thrived as a vital trading hub along the ancient Silk Roads, serving as a gateway into the vast expanses of Central Asia. But after European explorers found new sea routes, the Silk Roads fell silent, and Kashgar’s golden years began to fade, its once-bustling streets a quiet echo of the past.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and Kashgar has once again found itself at the center of the world stage, a critical stop in China's Belt and Road initiative. This ambitious revival of the ancient trade routes brings both opportunity and uncertainty. Yet through it all, the people of Kashgar remain resilient, fiercely protective of their cultural heritage. As the world shifts around them, many continue to live as their ancestors did, passing down their traditions from one generation to the next, all under the watchful gaze of the towering Pamir Mountains.
