Musician and Soldier (Classic Print)

Musician and Soldier (Classic Print)

Paris, France: I took this photo during the summer of 2016, during Opération Sentinelle, a military operation launched in response to the terrorist attacks in Paris and Île-de-France. During that time, an unusual mood hung heavy over the city; the usual hustle and bustle of Paris took on a palpable sense of unease.

Walking through the Palais du Louvre, I heard the sound of a violin echoing through the stone arcade. Following the music, I was surprised to find a soldier patrolling beneath the shadow of a column. Nearby, the busker continued playing, seemingly unaware of the soldier's presence. It was a moment of contrast: two people sharing the same space but existing in vastly different worlds. In that split second, I sensed a connection between them, and captured the image.

It’s hard to fully articulate what I felt in that moment. But reflecting on it now, maybe within each of us lies the capacity to create, to feel, and to witness both the beauty as well as the terror of our world. Despite the chaos and uncertainty of the times, no matter our place in society, we all have a role to play. And it is through our collective efforts that life continues to endure.
