Piopiotahi (Frameless Print)

Piopiotahi | Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand: White-fronted terns glide gracefully past the cascading waterfalls of Milford Sound. The Māori legend tied to this place tells us that after the trickster-hero Māui’s death following his brave attempt to win immortality for mankind, a single piopio bird flew into the fiord in mourning. That’s how Milford Sound got its name in te reo Māori: Piopiotahi.

Visiting Milford Sound in this day and age, it’s still easy to imagine this is a dwelling place of the gods.  Surrounded by such raw beauty, it is impossible not to feel a deep connection to the land. But this iconic landscape holds not just physical beauty— it carries the weight of the past, and the essence of stories passed down through generations.
