This grand square, once the heart of Samarkand, has seen nearly five centuries unfold around it. Towering iwans—vast facades of the madrasas—frame the square, each one a reminder of the Registan’s long journey from an intellectual hub to a bustling marketplace, and even a place of public executions. Now, it stands as a striking example of Persian Islamic architecture, and a breathtaking relic of the Timurid Empire’s glory, when Samarkand was its glittering capital.
